An Immigrant was awarded the «Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring”

Jorge López Gallardo, Professor of Physics at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), called into Café con Leche Monday, August 20, 2018 from El Paso, Texas. Jorge was awarded the «Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring” (PAESMEM), which is the greatest recognition bestowed by the White House for science mentoring.» The prize was awarded for the work of Jorge as a research supervisor of more than 50 young people, many of whom now are professors and researchers in several countries.  Jorge grew up in Ciudad Juarez, earned Bachelor’s and master’s degrees at UTEP, a PhD at Texas A & M University, and conducted research in Denmark and Berkeley California before returning to his Alma Mater as a professor. Jorge has published two books of Physics, four of analysis of presidential elections in Mexico, and more than one hundred scientific and general audience articles.

Jorge fue reconocido con el Premio Presidencial llamado en inglés “Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring” (PAESMEM), que es el mayor reconocimiento que otorga la Casa Blanca a mentores de ciencia. El premio fue otorgado por la trayectoria de Jorge como asesor de investigación de más de 50 jóvenes, muchos de los cuales ahora son profesores e investigadores en varios países.  Jorge creció en Ciudad Juárez, obtuvo una licenciatura y maestría en la UTEP, doctorado en la Texas A&M University y realizó investigaciones en Dinamarca y Berkeley California antes de regresar como profesor a su alma mater. Jorge ha publicado dos libros de física, cuatro de análisis de elecciones presidenciales en México, y más de un centenar de artículos científicos y de difusión de ciencia.
