CHRISTMAS IN SWEDEN – LORENA RU

Lorena Ru called into Cafe Con Leche on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 from Kalmar, Sweden. Lorena was born in Tabasco, Mexico, went to Spain to study for a Doctors Degree in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and then to Sweden for a Post-Doctorate. Lorena has lived in Sweden for ten years. She told us how they celebrate Christmas. The traditional Christmas lunch is a buffet, eaten at lunchtime. Cold fish is important. There is often herring (served in many different ways), gravlax (salmon which has been cured in sugar, salt and dill) and smoked salmon. It might include cold meats such as turkey, roast beef, a Christmas ham, cheeses and liver pate, pickles and bread. Another popular thing that many Swedes do on Christmas Eve afternoon is to watch Donald Duck (Not Trump). This traditions has been in existence since 1959. Around 3:00 p.m. the TV stations shows the Disney Special “From all of Us to All of You. Around 50% of the population watch it. Lorena will spend Christmas with two Mexican friends. She and her friends are married with Swedish husbands.

Lorena Ru llamó a Cafe Con Leche el miércoles 21 de diciembre deL 2016 desde Kalmar, Suecia. Lorena nació en Tabasco, México, se trasladó a España para estudiar un Doctorado en Microbiología y Genética Molecular y luego a Suecia para un Post-Doctorado. Lorena ha vivido en Suecia durante diez años. Ella nos dijo cómo se celebra la Navidad.  El tradicional almuerzo de Navidad es un buffet, se come a la hora del almuerzo. El pescado frío es importante. A menudo hay arenque (servido de muchas maneras diferentes), gravlax (salmón que se ha curado en azúcar, sal y eneldo) y salmón ahumado. Puede incluir carnes frías tales como pavo, carne asada, un jamón de Navidad, quesos y paté de hígado, pickles y pan. Otra cosa popular que muchos suecos hacen en la tarde de Nochebuena, es ver a Donald Duck (Not Trump). Esta tradición ha existido desde 1959. Alrededor de las 3:00 pm, las estaciones de televisión muestran el especial de Disney “De todos nosotros a todos ustedes.” Alrededor del 50% de la población lo ve. Lorena pasará la Navidad con dos amigos mexicanos. Y sus amigos están casados con maridos suecos.
